Timeless Guardians: The Heritage of Tyre and the Sacred Grounds of Qana

The South of Lebanon is a realm where history and heritage echo through every village, sea breeze, and ancient stone. It’s a place where every visit uncovers new layers of beauty, mystery, and heritage. Despite moments of hardship that have left their traces on its villages and towns, South Lebanon remains a beacon of resilience and renewal.

My December journey, right after the ceasefire agreement, ventured back to two of South Lebanon’s most significant destinations: the UNESCO-listed city of Tyre and the spiritually resonant town of Qana. Following a previous exploration of Kawkaba and Hasbaya—which you can read about here—this trip embraced the coastal path, offering a vivid blend of ancient splendor and modern-day vitality.

Tyre: A Living Testament to Glory and Resilience

Tyre, a coastal jewel of Lebanon, stands as a timeless witness to triumph and endurance. Renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage status, Tyre’s legacy as a Phoenician trading hub and maritime powerhouse is immortalized in its ancient ruins, lively port, and colorful streets. It’s a city where the past and present intertwine to create an unforgettable tapestry of history, culture, and vibrant daily life.

The journey began at the iconic fishing port, where fishermen’s boats swayed on the gentle waves, their reflections dancing on the clear blue waters. Overlooking it all, the Virgin Mary stands watch, a beacon of protection for the seafaring community. Along the port’s edge, cafés and seafood restaurants invite visitors to savor local cuisine and fresh seafood, all set against the backdrop of the Mediterranean’s endless horizon.

The stroll continued to the Christian Quarter, a labyrinth of narrow alleyways lined with colorful doors and historic charm, following a visit to Our Lady of the Sea Cathedral — a stunning landmark that houses a beautifully renovated underground ancient church. The winding paths of the quarter lead to breathtaking seafront views, with kiosks scattered along the way offering quick bites and coffee to enjoy on a bench by the seafront.

The journey continued at the Al-Bass Archaeological Site, one of the world’s most well-preserved Roman sites. Here, Hadrian’s Arch takes center stage, offering an iconic gateway into the past. The grandeur of the Roman Hippodrome—the largest of its kind still intact—unfolds as visitors walk the same paths once used for ancient chariot races. Each stone whispers a story of glory, offering a glimpse into Lebanon’s multi-layered remnants of Roman, Byzantine, and Phoenician civilizations.

Other notable sites include Al-Mina, where visitors can explore relics of ancient streets, columns, and baths that paint a vivid picture of life during the Phoenician and Roman eras.

Qana: A Place of Reverence and Reflection

Qana is a town of profound spiritual and historical significance, renowned for its biblical ties and standing as a site of reflection and reverence. It is believed to be where Jesus performed His first miracle of turning water into wine, a story that continues to draw pilgrims and visitors seeking a connection to this sacred past.

At the heart of Qana’s spiritual heritage is the Qana Grotto, believed to be the place where Jesus prayed and met with His disciples. This natural cavern, with its quiet serenity offers a tranquil space for contemplation and reverence.

The grotto’s area is also home to a remarkable stone engraving depicting Jesus with His disciples and the Virgin Mary, further elevating the site’s spiritual significance.
